What is a 6 in GCSE?

A grade 6 is a strong pass that sits between the old B and high B under the previous A*–G system.
England reformed its GCSE grading scale in 2017. The old letter grades (A*–G) were replaced by a numbered scale running from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest). The grade 6 sits just above the midpoint of that range.
This table shows how the new numbered grades map roughly to the old letter grades.
| New Grade | Old Equivalent | Classification |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Above A* | Exceptional pass |
| 8 | A* | Exceptional pass |
| 7 | A | Strong pass |
| 6 | High B | Strong pass |
| 5 | Low B / High C | Strong pass |
| 4 | Low C | Standard pass |
| 3 | D | Below standard pass |
The boundaries are approximate. Ofqual set grade 7 equal to the old A, and grade 4 equal to the old C, so grade 6 falls in the upper B range.
Most sixth forms ask for at least a grade 6 in subjects a student wants to continue at A-Level. Some competitive programmes ask for a 7 or above, but a 6 is widely accepted.
For university applications a few years later, GCSE grades still matter. Admissions teams often look for a spread of 6s and above, particularly in English and Maths.
Students following the Cambridge IGCSE pathway use a different grading scale — letter grades from A* down to G. A Cambridge IGCSE grade B is the closest equivalent to a grade 6 on the England 9–1 scale.
If you're studying from home through an online school, the grade you receive depends on the exam board, not the school. Home schooling families can enter students for either England-reformed GCSEs or Cambridge IGCSEs at approved exam centres.
At Digital International School, students study Cambridge IGCSE with live lessons from qualified instructors. IGCSE programmes start from AED 500 per month for all subjects — a flexible option for families across the UAE and GCC who want recognised qualifications without a physical classroom.
