When should I start revising for GCSE?

Start structured GCSE revision at least six months before your exams.

For most students sitting exams in May or June, that means beginning in earnest around October or November of Year 11. Earlier is better — but only if the revision is active and organised, not passive re-reading.

The six-month mark gives you enough time to cover every topic without cramming. It also leaves room for mock exams and targeted practice on weaker areas.

Homeschooling families often have an advantage here. Without a fixed school timetable, you can weave short revision sessions into weekly study from Year 10 onwards. This "little and often" approach reduces pressure later.

A realistic revision timeline breaks down into three broad phases:

  • Year 10: light review of completed topics, build notes
  • Early Year 11: structured topic-by-topic revision begins
  • Final 8–10 weeks: past papers, timed practice, gap-filling

The type of revision matters as much as when you start. Active recall — testing yourself — works far better than highlighting or copying notes.

Spacing your revision across weeks strengthens long-term memory. Studying a topic once, then returning to it days later, locks in knowledge more effectively than a single long session.

Past papers are your most powerful tool. Cambridge IGCSE mark schemes show exactly what examiners look for. Practise under timed conditions to build exam stamina.

If you're homeschooling, a structured programme helps you stay on track. Without set school deadlines, it's easy to misjudge pacing — especially across multiple GCSE subjects.

Digital International School delivers live IGCSE lessons with qualified instructors who guide students through revision planning. Weekly schedules, assignment tracking, and direct instructor messaging keep homeschooling students accountable.

IGCSE programmes at DIS start from AED 500 per month for all subjects. Students across the UAE and GCC join live classes and access a full resource library through the school's own platform.

The short answer: don't wait until January. Give yourself six months, use active revision methods, and build a clear week-by-week plan.
