Further Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics are widely considered the hardest A Level subjects.

These subjects share common traits. They require strong abstract thinking, large volumes of content, and consistent practice. Students can't rely on last-minute revision to pass.

Here are the A Level subjects most often rated as hardest by students and teachers:

  • Further Mathematics — abstract proofs and complex problem-solving
  • Chemistry — heavy content across organic, inorganic, and physical
  • Physics — mathematical reasoning combined with theory
  • Biology — vast memorisation and extended written answers
  • English Literature — subjective marking and essay skill

That said, difficulty is personal. A student who loves maths may find Further Mathematics demanding but manageable. A student who struggles with essays may find History far harder than Physics.

Subject pairing matters too. Taking three heavy-content subjects at once raises the overall workload. Balance is key when choosing your A Level combination.

Many families exploring homeschooling or online school worry about hard A Levels without classroom support. That's a fair concern. These subjects need regular instructor access, not just textbooks and videos.

At Digital International School, every A Level subject is taught live by qualified, GCC-based instructors. Students join scheduled lessons, ask questions in real time, and submit work for detailed feedback. A Levels start from AED 800 per month for all subjects.

Students also get full access to our learning platform. They can message instructors directly, track assignments, and review resources between lessons. That structure helps with the hardest subjects especially.

The hardest A Level is the one you don't prepare for properly. With the right support and consistent effort, even the toughest subjects become achievable. Choose subjects you're genuinely interested in — motivation counts more than raw difficulty ratings.
