How do you revise for Science GCSE?

Effective GCSE Science revision comes down to three things: active recall, spaced repetition, and past paper practice.

Passive re-reading of notes does not work well. Instead, close your notes and try to write out what you remember. This forces your brain to retrieve information, which strengthens memory far better than highlighting.

Spaced repetition means revisiting a topic several times over weeks, not cramming it the night before. Apps like Anki or simple flashcards work well for memorising equations, definitions, and key processes.

Past papers are essential. They show you the exact wording examiners use and the level of detail required in answers. Always check the mark scheme after each attempt — this is where most students find quick marks they were leaving on the table.

These revision strategies work across all three Science disciplines. Here are the main areas to cover for each:

  • Biology: cell biology, genetics, ecosystems, homeostasis
  • Chemistry: atomic structure, bonding, rates, electrolysis
  • Physics: forces, energy, electricity, waves

Cambridge IGCSE Science specifications follow a similar structure, so if you are studying under the British curriculum, the same revision approach applies directly.

For students in homeschooling or online school settings, building a consistent revision timetable matters even more. Without the natural routine of a physical classroom, it is easy to let revision drift. Block out specific revision slots each week and treat them as fixed.

Online learning also gives you access to recorded lessons and digital resource libraries, which means you can revisit explanations of tricky topics at any time. Use that advantage actively rather than just attending live lessons and moving on.

If you are unsure which topics to prioritise, speak to your Science teacher or check our FAQ for guidance on Cambridge subjects and what each exam paper covers.
