What is the biggest disadvantage of homeschooling?

The biggest disadvantage of homeschooling is social isolation. Children who learn at home often miss the daily peer contact that builds confidence and communication skills.
In a traditional school, students argue, collaborate, and make friends without effort. At home, parents have to actively organise that contact, and many simply don't have the time.
A second major concern is consistency. Homeschooling depends entirely on the parent's own knowledge and schedule. Gaps in subject coverage are common, especially once children reach secondary level and subjects like mathematics or the sciences become more demanding.
Assessment is another weak point. Without a structured programme, it can be hard to know whether a child is actually on track or falling behind. Many homeschooled children reach their mid-teens without sitting any formal qualifications, which creates problems when applying to universities or colleges.
There are also practical pressures on families. One parent typically has to stop working, or significantly reduce their hours, to manage the school day. That's a financial and personal cost that builds over time.
These are some of the most common concerns families raise when weighing up homeschooling against alternatives:
- Limited daily peer interaction
- Gaps in subject knowledge coverage
- No formal qualifications by default
- Heavy time burden on parents
- Reduced access to specialist teachers
Structured online schooling addresses most of these issues directly. The British curriculum, delivered through a school like DIS, gives children live lessons with qualified teachers, a peer group of classmates, and recognised qualifications such as Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels.
Students attend timetabled sessions, submit assignments, and interact with instructors and classmates in real time. The academic structure is there from the start, and parents are not expected to teach anything themselves.
