Can I teach in the UAE without a teaching degree?

In most UAE schools, a teaching degree is required by law. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi both set minimum qualification standards for licensed school staff.
However, not every teaching role falls under those rules. Online schools, tutoring platforms, and homeschool support providers often operate outside the standard licensing framework. This means the requirements can differ significantly.
If you are supporting a child who is home-educated, the picture is different again. Parents in the UAE can homeschool their children, and many families hire subject specialists rather than qualified teachers. A strong degree in your subject area is usually enough for that kind of role.
For roles within the British curriculum space, including Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels, schools typically look for subject expertise alongside some form of teaching experience. A PGCE or equivalent is preferred, but it is not always a hard requirement for every position.
At DIS, our teaching team works across GCC locations delivering live online lessons. Our instructors are postgraduate qualified, but the exact entry requirements vary by subject and year group.
Here are the main factors that affect whether a teaching degree is needed:
- Type of school (government, private, online, homeschool)
- Regulatory authority in the emirate
- Subject area and year group
- Whether the role is instructional or supportive
- Visa and work permit requirements
If you are considering a role supporting online or homeschool learners, your subject knowledge and experience may matter more than a formal teaching qualification. It is worth checking the specific requirements of the institution or family you plan to work with.
