What does it mean to be homeschooled?

Being homeschooled means a child receives their education outside a conventional school, taught by parents, tutors, or qualified online instructors instead of attending in person.
Homeschooling takes many forms. Some families follow a structured programme with set lessons, timetables, and formal assessments. Others take a more flexible approach, building learning around the child's pace and interests.
In recent years, online school has become the most common route for homeschooling families in the GCC and beyond. Rather than sitting in a classroom, students join live lessons from home via a laptop or tablet. They interact with qualified teachers in real time, submit assignments, and follow a formal academic pathway.
This is different from self-directed study or informal learning. A structured online school, for example, might deliver the full British curriculum across primary, secondary, and sixth form levels, with qualified instructors and scheduled classes every week.
There are several reasons families choose homeschooling. Common ones include:
- Relocating between countries
- Flexible scheduling needs
- Dissatisfaction with local school options
- Supporting children with specific learning needs
- Access to a preferred curriculum
Homeschooled students can still sit formal qualifications. Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels are both available to students who study outside a traditional school setting, provided they enrol through an appropriate provider.
At Digital International School, homeschooled students follow the same structured programme as any other student. They attend live lessons, receive feedback from postgraduate-qualified instructors, and work towards recognised Cambridge qualifications. Families across our GCC locations use DIS as their primary homeschool provider for exactly this reason.
Being homeschooled does not mean learning alone or missing out on structure. With the right online school, it can mean a rigorous, accredited education delivered entirely from home.
