What is the age limit for UAE school entry?

Children must turn 4 by 31 August of the academic year to enter FS1 in the UAE.

This rule applies across most private schools regulated by KHDA in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi. Each key stage has its own age requirement, and schools check birth certificates at enrolment.

Here is a summary of typical UAE school entry ages by year group:

Year GroupAge by 31 AugustCurriculum Stage
FS14 years oldFoundation Stage
FS25 years oldFoundation Stage
Year 16 years oldKey Stage 1
Year 712 years oldKey Stage 3
Year 1015 years oldIGCSE
Year 1217 years oldA-Level

These ages reflect the British curriculum structure used by most international schools in the UAE.

Some children miss the 31 August cut-off by days or weeks. In a traditional school, they must wait a full year. This can be frustrating for families who know their child is ready.

Homeschooling gives families more control over when a child starts formal learning. Parents can begin structured lessons earlier or later based on the child's readiness rather than a fixed date.

An online school combines that flexibility with a recognised curriculum. Students follow a structured programme with qualified teachers but aren't bound by the same rigid age-gate policies as physical schools.

Digital International School (DIS) teaches the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level curriculum live online. Students across the UAE and GCC join scheduled classes from home. DIS accepts students based on academic readiness, not just birth date.

IGCSE tuition starts from AED 500 per month and A-Level from AED 800 per month. Every student gets live lessons, direct instructor access, and full assignment tracking through the DIS platform.

If your child falls outside standard UAE age limits, or if you want a more flexible path, an online school or homeschooling route is worth exploring.
