What is the difference between GCSE and IGCSE?

GCSEs are UK-national qualifications; IGCSEs are their international equivalent, built for students outside the UK.
GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. Schools across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland use GCSEs as the standard qualification for students aged 14–16.
IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Cambridge Assessment International Education developed it for use anywhere in the world.
Both sit at the same academic level. Universities and employers treat them as equal. The core difference is design and delivery.
Here are the key differences between the two qualifications:
| Feature | GCSE | IGCSE |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Students in England, Wales, Northern Ireland | Students worldwide, including the GCC |
| Exam boards | AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel | Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel |
| Coursework | Often required in many subjects | Usually exam-only assessment options |
| Grading system | 9–1 scale (England) or A*–G | A*–G scale internationally |
| Availability | Registered UK schools only | Schools and centres globally |
The table above shows why IGCSEs suit families based in the UAE and wider GCC. They don't depend on a UK school setting.
This flexibility makes IGCSEs the natural fit for online schooling and homeschooling. Students can prepare through live online lessons and sit exams at a local British Council centre.
GCSEs often include mandatory coursework. That coursework must be supervised and marked within a registered UK school. This makes GCSEs difficult to study remotely from abroad.
IGCSEs remove that barrier. Most IGCSE subjects offer a 100% exam-based route. Students study from home and then attend one exam session.
Recognition is equal. UK universities, including Russell Group institutions, accept IGCSE grades. So do universities across the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
For families in the GCC exploring homeschooling or online schooling, the IGCSE is the practical choice. It provides a rigorous British curriculum qualification without requiring physical attendance at a UK school.
At DIS, students study Cambridge IGCSE subjects through live online lessons with qualified instructors. Programmes start from AED 500 per month for all subjects.
