Most pilot training programmes ask for at least five GCSEs at grade C (grade 4 under the 9-1 scale) or above, with Mathematics, English, and Physics being the core requirements.
Physics is particularly important because it underpins the science behind flight, navigation, and meteorology. If your school doesn't offer Physics as a standalone GCSE, a combined Science GCSE that covers physics content is usually accepted.
Some airline cadet schemes and aviation colleges set higher grade expectations. A few programmes prefer grades B or above in Maths and Physics specifically. Always check the entry requirements of the specific pathway you're targeting.
Beyond GCSEs, most commercial pilot training routes also require A-Levels or equivalent qualifications, often in Maths and Physics. The Cambridge IGCSE is widely recognised by aviation colleges and training providers, including those operating across GCC locations and internationally.
These are the core GCSEs most training providers look for:
- Mathematics (grade C/4 minimum)
- English Language (grade C/4 minimum)
- Physics or combined Science
- Two additional GCSEs at C/4 or above
- Further sciences or geography as useful extras
Students following the British curriculum, whether in school or through online tutoring and home education, can sit these subjects through Cambridge IGCSE qualifications. Results are recognised by universities, aviation colleges, and cadet programmes worldwide.
If you're studying remotely or through a flexible programme, the subject combination still matters. Prioritise Maths and Physics above all else, and aim as high as you can on grades. A strong academic foundation in these areas gives you the best start when applying to competitive cadet schemes.
