What is the hardest GCSE?

Further Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are widely considered the hardest GCSEs. Each requires strong analytical thinking and sustained effort across complex topics.

Further Maths is often ranked at the top. It covers abstract algebra, advanced calculus concepts, and proof-writing that go well beyond standard Maths. Students without a natural affinity for numbers find it particularly demanding.

Physics and Chemistry follow closely. Both combine mathematical problem-solving with detailed theoretical content. Students must apply formulas accurately under timed exam conditions, which adds pressure.

These are the subjects most students find the most challenging in the British curriculum:

  • Further Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • History
  • Modern Foreign Languages
  • English Literature

Difficulty is partly personal. A student who reads widely may find English Literature manageable but struggle with Chemistry. Someone with strong number skills may breeze through Further Maths but find essay-based subjects harder.

At the Cambridge IGCSE level, the same subjects tend to be the toughest. IGCSE Physics and IGCSE Chemistry require precise recall and the ability to interpret data under exam conditions. IGCSE Further Mathematics is not widely offered but IGCSE Mathematics (Extended) is already considered demanding.

The good news is that difficulty is not fixed. With qualified instruction, a clear study plan, and regular practice, students make real progress in even the hardest subjects. Online tutoring gives students access to specialist teachers for each subject, rather than relying on a generalist.
