Cambridge IGCSE English Language has two examination papers, plus an optional speaking endorsement in some syllabuses.
The two English Language papers test reading and writing skills separately. Paper 1 focuses on reading passages and comprehension. Paper 2 focuses on directed writing and composition. Together, they cover the full range of skills required by the British curriculum.
Cambridge IGCSE English Literature is also assessed across two papers. Paper 1 covers prose and poetry. Paper 2 covers drama texts. Some syllabuses offer a coursework option in place of one paper, depending on how your school delivers the programme.
Here is a quick summary of the standard paper structure for both subjects:
| Subject | Number of Papers | What Each Paper Covers |
|---|---|---|
| IGCSE English Language | 2 papers | Reading (Paper 1); Directed writing and composition (Paper 2) |
| IGCSE English Literature | 2 papers | Prose and poetry (Paper 1); Drama texts (Paper 2) |
| Speaking endorsement | Optional component | Assessed separately; does not affect written grade |
The speaking component is graded separately and does not change the final written examination grade. It is noted on the certificate but kept distinct from the core result.
