Is Further Maths a GCSE?

Further Maths is not a standard GCSE subject. It is offered as a full A-Level qualification, typically studied alongside Mathematics A-Level.
At GCSE level, the closest equivalent is Additional Mathematics, sometimes called GCSE Further Mathematics. This is a separate qualification that goes beyond the core GCSE Mathematics syllabus. It is not the same as Further Maths A-Level.
Under the British curriculum, students usually complete Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics before progressing to A-Levels. Those who want to study Further Maths do so at A-Level, not at GCSE stage.
Cambridge A-Levels offer both Mathematics and Further Mathematics as separate qualifications. Students who take Further Mathematics alongside Mathematics gain a strong advantage for university courses in engineering, physics, and computer science.
These are the key differences between the two levels:
- GCSE or IGCSE Mathematics: core qualification, ages 14-16
- Additional Mathematics (GCSE level): extended content, pre-A-Level
- A-Level Further Mathematics: advanced qualification, ages 16-18
- Studied with: A-Level Mathematics, not instead of it
If your child is strong in maths and considering A-Levels, Further Mathematics is worth serious consideration. It is demanding but highly regarded by top universities.
At DIS, students across our GCC locations can study both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A-Level through live lessons with qualified instructors. If you have questions about subject combinations or entry requirements, contact us and our academic team will help.
