There is no single official list of 11 GCSE subjects. Students usually take between 8 and 11 subjects in total, selecting from a wide range of options.

The Cambridge IGCSE (the international version of the GCSE, widely used across the GCC and beyond) offers over 70 subjects. Most students combine core requirements with personal choices.

These are the subject groups students typically choose from:

  • English Language and English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Combined or separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Humanities (History, Geography)
  • Modern Foreign Languages (Arabic, French, Spanish)
  • Business Studies or Economics

Most school programmes require English and Mathematics. Beyond that, students pick subjects that match their interests and future plans.

For students following the British curriculum at a virtual school, subject choice works the same way. At Digital International School, students can take individual Cambridge IGCSE subjects or a full subject bundle from AED 500 per month.

Families who home-educate often enrol their children in a structured online programme to ensure full curriculum coverage and access to qualified instructors. This gives home learners the same subject breadth as a traditional school setting, with live lessons and formal assessments.

After completing their IGCSE subjects, most students progress to A-Levels, where they narrow their focus to three or four subjects aligned with their university goals.
