English Language GCSE is a qualification that tests a student's ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English.

Students typically study it between ages 14 and 16, making it part of the Cambridge IGCSE stage of the British curriculum. The international version is called Cambridge IGCSE English Language.

The subject is not about literature. It focuses on practical skills: understanding unseen texts, writing for different audiences, and using language accurately.

Assessment usually includes two written exam papers. Some exam board specifications also include a spoken language component, assessed separately.

These are the main skill areas the qualification covers:

  • Reading comprehension of unseen texts
  • Directed and creative writing tasks
  • Language analysis and evaluation
  • Accurate use of vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation
  • Spoken language (component varies by board)

English Language is considered a core GCSE or IGCSE subject. Most secondary schools and colleges require a pass grade before a student can progress to A-Levels or vocational programmes.

For students studying outside a traditional school, such as those in homeschooling arrangements or virtual schools, English Language can be studied and examined through an online school. At DIS, it is available as part of the IGCSE programme alongside a full range of Cambridge subjects.

Students across GCC locations study Cambridge IGCSE English Language with DIS using live lessons delivered by qualified instructors. The subject is available from AED 500 per month.
